Map of Washington State Counties
Map showing Whatcom County
Whatcom County is located in the northwest corner of Washington state, just south of the Canadian border.
While our society is located in Whatcom County, our members research throughout the United States and the world.
Whatcom County, and indeed, Washington State, is much younger than our cousins to the east. The region was part of the Oregon Territory from 1848-1853, prior to becoming the Washington Territory in 1853. For a map of the Oregon Territory, click here. Washington was admitted to the Union as the 42nd state on November 11, 1889.
Whatcom County was home to Northwest Coast Indians (the Lummi, Nooksack, Samish and Semiahmoo) prior to European settlement.
The Whatcom Genealogical Society (WGS) was founded in 1969 and incorporated in 1980. We are a 501(c)(3) corporation. For more information about WGS, please click on the "About Us" tab.
If you have ancestors who arrived early in Whatcom County's history, check out our Pioneer and Early Settler Certificate program! Click here for more information.
Our monthly meeting topics reflect our members' varied interests. We hope you will join us - visitors are always welcome at our meetings. Click here to learn about upcoming meetings and events.
